Ingredients
- 5 to 7 tart cooking apples (Granny Smith)
- 3/4-1 cup sugar*
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- dash of salt
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg (optional)
- 2 tablespoons butter cubed
Directions
- Mix sugar, flour, salt, and cinnamon in a large pot.
- Peel, core, and thinly slice apples. Place the sliced apples in the pot and toss to coat.
- Let sit for 3-5 minutes to allow apple to release some juice.
- Add cubed butter to the pot and mix gently.
- Heat over medium heat, stirring frequently (gently), until sugar has melted and juices begin to boil.
- Reduce heat and simmer, stirring often, until apples are tender and semi-translucent.
- If the syrup starts to get too thick, add a tablespoon of water, stir and continue to simmer. You may have to repeat this a couple of times. Just keep an eye on it.
- Repeat until apples are to your liking.
- Serve immediately or let cool completely before storing covered in the refrigerator.
Notes
*You can use either white or brown sugar. I switch it up. Brown sugar will result in a slightly more caramel flavor.
