Stewed Apples

Ingredients

  • 5 to 7 tart cooking apples (Granny Smith)
  • 3/4-1 cup sugar*
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • dash of salt
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons butter cubed

Directions

  1. Mix sugar, flour, salt, and cinnamon in a large pot.
  2. Peel, core, and thinly slice apples. Place the sliced apples in the pot and toss to coat.
  3. Let sit for 3-5 minutes to allow apple to release some juice.
  4. Add cubed butter to the pot and mix gently.
  5. Heat over medium heat, stirring frequently (gently), until sugar has melted and juices begin to boil.
  6. Reduce heat and simmer, stirring often, until apples are tender and semi-translucent.
  7. If the syrup starts to get too thick, add a tablespoon of water, stir and continue to simmer. You may have to repeat this a couple of times. Just keep an eye on it.
  8. Repeat until apples are to your liking.
  9. Serve immediately or let cool completely before storing covered in the refrigerator.

Notes

*You can use either white or brown sugar. I switch it up. Brown sugar will result in a slightly more caramel flavor.
